The Lady Mayoress (pictured) stopped by and enjoyed a cup of our new Eros Peppermint tea. The tea is infused in a biodegradable pyramid pouch and is both Fairtrade and Organic.

Scarfell Pike is the highest mountain in England at 3209 feet and the climb is a difficult one over rough terrain. The expedition was not helped by difficult weather conditions including snow and mist reducing visibility to just a few yards at times.

If the group intended to get away from work it was not successful, as they bumped into a major Peros customer at the peak, Phil Gilbert from the Beans Coffee Stop chain.What are the chances of that happening?

The same group of ladies climbed Mount Snowden last year so, its Ben Nevis here we come for 2013!

David was amazed at the level of work required to install a pump. “The logistics in finding the right spot and then installing the well are massive. The newly drilled bore hole we visited required three teams working for two weeks to get to this stage; the drilling teams are continually drilling new bore holes funded by One Water. The team based in the region plan which communities will be suitable to have a bore hole, the site is then surveyed and assessed to see if it is suitable. If it is suitable, a test hole is drilled and the quality of the water and the pressure are measured. If the site passes these two tests then a well will be installed. The teams arrive on site and have a relay system going to bring supplies back from the nearest town, which may be 250 miles away. The site has a supervisor who stays on the site until the work is complete. On the site we visited, the supervisor is from Cornwall and he has slept on site every night since he arrived just after Christmas. The total cost of installing this well will be in excess of £20,000. We are so grateful to all the Peros customers who purchase One Water, ensuring these life saving wells continue to be installed.”

Providing fresh clean water in the Turkana region is a very difficult challenge. The population live in very remote areas, where the water source may be over 80 metres below the surface. The substrate is also loose, and each bore hole has to be drilled and then lined to ensure it does not fill in on itself.

Raj and David (seen here with on site with Duncan Goose, founder of the One Brand) were fortunate to see a bore hole installation just at the moment water came bursting out from the drill! This was an exciting moment, but there would still be some time before the bore hole was ready for the pump to be attached and the local community could benefit. Although one of the local children found the drilling lorry a great place to shade from the scorching midday sun!!

 En route to the camp, Raj noticed a young child getting water from a rough hole dug in the ground. The water was probably unsafe to drink, and is easily contaminated and often very dirty. “Without these wells, kids are digging for water, animals use them, it was shocking to see how some people have to struggle for something that we take for granted here in the UK. The trip has changed the way I think about something simple like turning on a tap.”

 “Each pump costs on average £15,000 and is funded through the sale of water and vitamin water – the deeper the well, the more expensive the pump,” explained Raj. Adjacent to the vegetable garden and water pump was a dried river bed, a reminder of the harsh drought that the area is going through. In the parched river bed, people had dug a hole for water, but unfortunately, these shallow holes are easily contaminated by animals and can spread water borne diseases.

The local communities were agriculturally based, and as well as the pumps, overflow troughs were being made from stones and concrete, to ensure that none of the precious water was wasted. The overflow is used to water animals and so the pump is especially useful.

Both David and Raj tried out the pumps, and watched as community members used them for the first time. Raj was deeply affected by the trip. “I noticed that the water pumps were all near dried up river beds, which just goes to show the drought has caused these river beds to be barren. This is why there is more need for pumps funded by Peros customers of One Water, to save more lives in the future.”
