Helping the University of Worcester Achieve Green League Success

The University of Worcester has been awarded a ‘First Class Honours’ by the People & Planet Green League and ranks as the 3rd Greenest University in the UK. Students and Staff alike have worked positively to promote energy efficiency, recycling, cut private car journeys, shop locally, reduce carbon emissions and support Fairtrade and sustainability at home and abroad.

On Wednesday students were treated to the opportunity to try Nero & Bianco Fairtrade and Organic chocolate and to learn more about the mission and vision behind One Water.

The purpose of promoting both brands was to demonstrate to students and staff that through the purchases they make on campus, their choices can have a really positive impact on communities in some of the worlds poorest countries.

Charity Marathon Success at The University of Lincoln

Former soldiers Mickey Jackson and Andy Swarbrooke marched 26 miles for charity on 14 October. But what made this marathon attempt so special was that they both wore 35lb backpacks whilst marching the course. “We wanted to do something really difficult,” said ‘Jacko’, who served in 2503 Squadron RAF Regiment and now works at the University of Lincoln as a Porter. Prior to the event Jacko said “We’ve been in training for six months now, so we feel ready for the challenge. Doing this for causes that are so close to our hearts is really important and we are imploring anyone to donate what they can to help us reach our target of £2,000 for these very important charities. All monies raised will split equally between the St Barnabas Hospice and the National Autism Foundation.”

The brave duo decided to up the ante of a marathon by adding the regulation weight of a full army backpack to encourage as many people as possible to support them.

After marching 30 times around the Brayford Campus at the University of Lincoln they achieved their mission which was a fantastic result. They were supported in their effort by Peros who donated healthy snacks from their new range and bottles of One Water. Well done to Jacko and Andy it was a brilliant result at the end of a tough challenge.

Students at New Durham College support One Water

Students from New Durham College recently took part in “Jerry Can Races” to promote One Water at the college. Students took turns carrying jerry cans of water as a taste of the daily experience of many women and children in Africa who have to carry water long distances to drink and use for bathing and cooking. Peros were on hand to organize the races and hand out One Water scratch cards all day long. Many students won One Water footballs, bags, flasks and of course bottles of One Water.

As Nero & Bianco chocolate has been launched at the college, students also tasted the Fairtrade and Organic range, including the new Butterscotch and Orange flavours. It was a fun day with an education kick thrown in too.

Peros Support the Imperial College Union Fairtrade Society

The active and enthusiastic ICU Fairtrade Society recently held a stall for Fresher’s week, which Peros was delighted to support with samples of Fairtrade juice, Ubuntu Cola and Nero & Bianco chocolate. Imperial College is a Fairtrade University, and Peros are their key supplier of Fairtrade goods. One of the reasons Fairtrade has been so successful at the College, is undoubtedly due to the strong support of the student body and staff, and the team at the Fairtrade Society.

Nick Greenwood, from the ICU Fairtrade Society had the following to say:

“We all had a great time on the stall and we were easily the most popular in our room (although I was a little too busy to check!). Our team was able to engage very successfully with the students wandering around and ensured they all had an understanding of what Fairtrade means as they gratefully accepted the enticing array of samples we offered. We were regularly asked by students passing by whether we were the chocolate society even with their stall just a little way away! They all stayed to try our chocolates, listen about Fairtrade and signed onto the mailing list. During the event we were able to add around 350 new emails onto our mailing list which is a huge success! More photos can be seen at www.ICUFairtrade.org.uk”

A Sunny Start to the Term

Hundreds of Freshers were treated to sunshine and fantastic tasting eros coffee as they were dropped off by family and friends at the start of their Bristol University career yesterday.

The Source Café, a funky coffee shop at Hiatt Baker Hall, was the site for many nervous goodbyes as the excited Freshers contemplated what the next few years would hold.

The Eros bike was on hand to support a huge demand for coffee and Peros Head Barista, Duane Kennedy, was busy making fantastic tasting lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites. He also found time to train some of the coffee shop team to help them hone their skills at coffee making and latte art.

Fairtrade in Numbers

The Fairtrade Foundation has just released its annual review, and it’s great to see Fairtrade coming so far in terms of sales, recognition and the difference it makes to farmers in the developing world.

According to the Foundation’s 2010/2011 report, 77% of people recognize the Fairtrade mark, retail sales have hit £1BN, £18.5 Million has been generated in Fairtrade premiums for workers and farmers from UK Sales this year and 1.2 Million farmers and workers benefit worldwide from Fairtrade.

Sales of Fairtrade coffee in the UK have steadily increased from 12,112 tonnes in 2009 to 14,055 tonnes in 2010. There was also a 336% increase in the volume sales of Fairtrade chocolate from 9,202 tonnes in 209 to 40,125 in 2010.

This year, Peros has increased its portfolio of Fairtrade products, and ranges such as the Nero & Bianco range of Fairtrade and Organic chocolates are key to meeting this increasing consumer demand for high quality ethical products.

How long have you been at Peros? Since April 2004 and I have been working in the coffee business for over 18 years

What do you do in a typical day? Liaising with new and existing customers, introducing our varied and extensive product range. This not only includes beverages, confectionary and soft drinks but also matching customer needs with the right equipment for their individual establishments.

What’s your favourite product in the range? It has to be our eros Organic espresso bean as I find the quality of this coffee outstanding and therefore I always use it as one of my sample coffees at tastings

What is your ultimate coffee? Cappuccino with creamy dense foam and a fine dusting of chocolate

The most exciting place I’ve been with Peros – There are so many to choose from but I would say the One Water Ball. It was like being a celebrity on the red carpet when you arrived and the evening was just packed full of entertainment but with a serious message behind the whole event.

If I wasn’t doing this, I’d be… running my own coffee shop chain

Tasting Fairtrade Delights at Plymouth University

Returning and new students at Plymouth University were able to sample a range of Fairtrade products as part of the University’s Freshers Activity.

We sampled products in the impressively designed Roland Levinsky Building and students loved the range on offer. Especially popular were the One World Fairtrade Shortbread and the Nero & Bianco Organic and Fairtrade Chocolate.

Many of the students were aware of the Fairtrade mark and what it stands for, however they weren’t aware that you could buy such fantastic Fairtrade products as Fairtrade Jelly Beans and Fairtrade Cup Cakes so the sampling gave them a great chance to try!

One Biscuits from Peros help feed Africa

Peros are proud to be launching TODAY – One Biscuits – a range of biscuits with a distinctly ethical flavour. Profits from the sale of One Biscuits will fund projects in Malawi, including children’s feeding programmes and a project to set up micro-bakeries providing sustainable employment for women.

One Biscuits, ideal for foodservice and hospitality, will be available throughout the UK exclusively through Peros.

The range comprises individually-wrapped, 30g biscuits in five delicious flavours; double choc chip; fruit & oat; fruit Shrewsbury; ginger; and golden crunch. The biscuits, available from today, will be supplied in a mixed case of 100 – 20 of each flavour.

The concept of One Biscuits emerged when Peros joined forces with The One Foundation to run a competition under the One Big Idea banner. The challenge was to come up with a foodservice or hospitality product that would not only work well commercially, but also have a tangible link between itself and the project it would help fund in Malawi.

One biscuits will now go into production as part of the One brand family and will be available for sale exclusively through Peros. Peros have worked with the One Foundation for the last five years and, through sales of bottled water brand One Water, have raised over £1 million, contributing to more than 100 life-changing clean water projects in Africa.
