Scarfell Pike is the highest mountain in England at 3209 feet and the climb is a difficult one over rough terrain. The expedition was not helped by difficult weather conditions including snow and mist reducing visibility to just a few yards at times.

If the group intended to get away from work it was not successful, as they bumped into a major Peros customer at the peak, Phil Gilbert from the Beans Coffee Stop chain.What are the chances of that happening?

The same group of ladies climbed Mount Snowden last year so, its Ben Nevis here we come for 2013!

This shows one of the vegetable garden schemes funded by sales of One Vitamin Water to Peros customers.

One Vitamin Enhanced Water comes in three tasty flavours:

 “Each pump costs on average £15,000 and is funded through the sale of water and vitamin water – the deeper the well, the more expensive the pump,” explained Raj. Adjacent to the vegetable garden and water pump was a dried river bed, a reminder of the harsh drought that the area is going through. In the parched river bed, people had dug a hole for water, but unfortunately, these shallow holes are easily contaminated by animals and can spread water borne diseases.

The local communities were agriculturally based, and as well as the pumps, overflow troughs were being made from stones and concrete, to ensure that none of the precious water was wasted. The overflow is used to water animals and so the pump is especially useful.

Both David and Raj tried out the pumps, and watched as community members used them for the first time. Raj was deeply affected by the trip. “I noticed that the water pumps were all near dried up river beds, which just goes to show the drought has caused these river beds to be barren. This is why there is more need for pumps funded by Peros customers of One Water, to save more lives in the future.”

Perry Court Farm Apple Crisps are made using a completely natural drying process; warm air is blown over the slices of apple for hours and hours until crisp and scrumptious, and then packaged quickly to keep them like this. This slow drying method keeps all the goodness of a fresh apple in the crisps, but allows you to keep it much longer (drying is a natural way of preserving fruit, used since the Ancient Egyptians!!).

Perry Court Farm uses traditional English varieties of apple, selecting the best ones from over 100 different cultivars, including Cox orange Pippin, Laxtons Fortune and Ribstone Pippin.

Raj and David visited several communities that have benefited from the sale of One Water to Peros customers. In one community, one and a half hours north by plane from Nairobi, members of the community previously had to walk 10-12 miles per day to find water. The pump that has been installed has been drilled to a depth of 51 metres, ensuring a continuous supply of clean, fresh water. “The pump was relatively easy to use, and it takes 6 minutes to fill an 18 litre jerry can. Each pump has a trough, and the waste water is used to water the goats. It means there’s less possibility of contamination”, explained Raj.

With the most serious drought in the past 60 years currently affecting the community, the pump is literally a life saver. Rain patterns have changed, and there hasn’t been enough significant rain to fill lakes and water systems. This small hand pump serves a community of 2500 people, as well as the livestock of the community and surrounding farmers.

In the past year, the College’s restaurant has actively promoted Fairtrade to students, staff and visitors. They’ve sold 22,856 cups of Fairtrade Cafedirect coffee, 17,684 cups of Fairtrade tea, 1,872 Fairtrade cookies and cakes and 788 bars of Fairtrade chocolate. This is a commendable achievement for a small College, and the Peros team were happy to help celebrate a great partnership during Fairtrade Fortnight.

The Catering team were also giving students a chance to have a free Fairtrade Banana Muffin which was baked on site if they filled out a simple card to pledge something about Fairtrade.

In addition, samples were offered on the new tasting One World Fairtrade Flapjacks range which went down a treat with the students!
